Local Fundraisers – Derby’s ‘Walk for the Hungry and Homeless’

If you’re looking for something to do with the family this weekend, sign up for the 19th Annual Walk for the Hungry & Homeless in Derby. A scenic 3.4 mile walk along the Naugatuck River, the event begins this Saturday May 21st at 9am, rain or shine. The event is $20 to register and all proceeds go to the fundraiser. Spooner House Executive Director Susan Agamy says, “The annual walk is an important event not just for raising critical funds for Spooner House, but for increasing awareness about the issues facing our neighbors, friends, and community and finding ways we can come together to improve people’s lives.” Derby wants to raise $19,000 this year, compared to last year’s $11,000. The Milford Oyster Festival is the largest one day event in New England. For 42 years, the Oyster Festival has been a Milford tradition. Occurring in mid-august, today the event has the largest variety of oysters of any event in the USA. The event has over 35,000 oysters of 18 different varieties. This year, the festival will even be headlined by rock dinosaurs ‘Blue Oyster Cult’, who released their classic debut album 2 years before Milford started holding the oyster festival. The 1-day event draws over 50,000 attendees each year. In addition to oysters, the festival also has arts, crafts, music, sports, amusement rides, food, and oyster shucking. Schools Out in Easton – The Adam’s Schoolhouse

While your kids might be thinking that last thing they want to do this time of year is go visit a school, but The Adam’s Schoolhouse on Westport Road in Easton might surprise them. One of eleven small single-room schoolhouses built in the area during the 19th century, many have since been torn down or expanded into residential homes. The Adam’s Schoolhouse still stands, but was actually relocated from its original location, the busy corner of Adams and Sport Hill Road. Today, the school house is home to the Easton Historical Society. They regularly hold special events, exhibits, and meetings at the schoolhouse. This past weekend, Seamens Moving, in collaboration with Aspire Metro, a popular residential magazine, hosted an open house at this stunning $17,500,000 Long Island Mansion sitting in over 6 lush acres including luxuries such as both indoor and outdoor pool, bowling alley, wine cellar, elevator, and game room.  The house is located in the town of Brookville, and has the added distinction of being named by business week as one of the wealthiest towns in America. There are many sites of interest in Brookville, such as the St. Joan de Arc Chapel, which was dismantled and brought here from France and is now located on the grounds of Marquette University. It truly is a site to see!

Orange Connecticut to Orange Ohio

After the American Revolution, Connecticut was one of a few states to have a claim over the western portions of the country. The land was part of the Connecticut Western Reserve, a portion of land claimed by the colony of Connecticut in the 1800’s.  Much of this land was in present-day Ohio. A large portion of the lands were dubbed “Fire Lands” and offered to Connecticut colonists who had lost their homes/lands in the war. Some of those lands were also given back to the Native Americans as part of the Treaty of Greeneville in 1795.  In 1815, settlers from The Colony of Connecticut travelled across the country to settle in Ohio. Given that many of them came from Orange Connecticut, they called their settlement Orange Township. Fairfield’s Favorite Deli Turns 30 – The Country Cow Deli

Thirty years ago on Black Rock Turnpike,  a deli opened by the name of ‘The Country Cow Deli’. The deli is well-known among locals for its breakfast sandwiches; one Fairfield resident describes his favorite breakfast sandwich there as “simply the best bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich I’ve ever had”. On weekends and weekdays in the early morning hours the wait for a sandwich can be 15 to 30 minutes, due to the high volume of business. Many regulars call in their orders ahead of time to avoid the long wait. The Country Cow Deli also offers fantastic grinders (they were even featured in Fairfield Magazine).
