After the American Revolution, Connecticut was one of a few states to have a claim over the western portions of the country. The land was part of the Connecticut Western Reserve, a portion of land claimed by the colony of Connecticut in the 1800’s.  Much of this land was in present-day Ohio. A large portion of the lands were dubbed “Fire Lands” and offered to Connecticut colonists who had lost their homes/lands in the war. Some of those lands were also given back to the Native Americans as part of the Treaty of Greeneville in 1795.  In 1815, settlers from The Colony of Connecticut travelled across the country to settle in Ohio. Given that many of them came from Orange Connecticut, they called their settlement Orange Township.
