Local Heroes – Paul Newman’s Legacy in Westport
Paul Newman was one of the most celebrated and respected actors of the 20th century. While he was well-known for classics such as The Hustler (1961) or Cool Hand Luke (1967), Newman also carried a legacy of as a businessman & philanthropist. Newman moved to Westport in 1950 where he took acting classes at The Yale School of Drama. Newman fell in love with Connecticut and decided to reside in Westport. Over the next few decades, Newman became an active supporter of the community and Westport Country Playhouse. In 1982, Newman ventured into the business route with Newman’s Own, which was a niche food product line at the time. Today, Newman’s Own is available at any supermarket, and donates all after-tax profits to charity (over $460 million since 1982).
