Interested in a historic home with character in southern Connecticut? The Geoppler Cider Mill (currently for sale) could be just what you’re looking for. Built on the border of Redding and Ridgefield, this unique building is actually half in Redding, half in Ridgefield. Originally built as a Cider Mill, the property had an apple orchard above the mill. In addition to serving as mill, by the early 1900s the building was also serving as the town post-office for the nearby area. It even served as a local railroad station, which drew a large number of New Yorkers and immigrants to the area. Looking for a great hike near New Haven? Check out the Alice Newton Street Memorial Park in Woodbridge Connecticut. The parks tranquil 82 acres were donated to the town in 1928 by Newton Herbert Street, and dedicated and named for his mother, Alice Newton Street. Attractions include the Wewapaug falls in the northern section of the park, as well as multiple bridges, benches, and stone walls scattered throughout the trails. Ever wondered where Connecticut’s state recognizable state tune, “Yankee Doodle Dandy”, came about? During the French and Indian War, a group of ragtag Norwalk soldiers gathered to support British troops at Fort Crailo, New York. But as they were gathering in the yard of Col. Thomas Fitch (son of the governor, also Thomas Finch), the young women of the town were troubled by the men’s lack of uniform. With makeshift plumes made of chicken feathers, the men marched to New York in their makeshift uniforms. The British added new lines to a popular tune at the time, “Lucy Locket”, referencing the rag-tag bunch of Norwalk soldiers. Just outside the humming downtown of Milford and behind city hall, you’ll find the Milford Duck Pond. This site is home to a variety of waterfowl throughout the year. A popular destination for photoshoots, it’s also a great place for a picnic! Every June, the river is overrun by small yellow ducks for the annual Milford Duck Race. But the Darien Historical Society has done just that with both the Bates-Scofield house, as well as the Scofield Barn. In 1964, the house was facing demolition, but was given to a physically moved to its current location on Old King’s Highway North. In 2008, the historic Scofield Barn was also moved to this address, then restored and attached to the Bates-Scofield house. Looking for a good hike in the Trumbull area? Check out the Old Mine Park, a historic site that was once home to short-lived mining operation. While the mine primarily produced Tungsten, many other minerals and crystals have been found there as well, including beryl, opal, topaz, tourmaline and 60 others. The site became a park in 1940 after the land was claimed by the state. You can still see the meter thick veins in certain areas of the park. Featuring an 11-mile hiking trail, a picnic area, a bridge over the Pequonnock River, and an open field, the park is a great place to spend  a summer day with friends or family. You might miss this 18^th century architectural artifact in passing, but take a second look! The Mather Homestead, located on Darien’s Brookside Road, was built in a secluded location in hopes of keeping it safe from the British Raids common at the time. Locals entrusted valuables and keepsakes with the Mathers family, who would hide them in various locations on the property. This didn’t stop the British though, who made the trek to the home in 1782, stealing supplies and valuables despite the Mather’s attempts to conceal the property. Just like Seamen’s will work tirelessly to move you in any weather, Minks to Sinks has a reputation for preserving through the toughest weather.
