In the spring of 1953, Fairfield resident and father David N. Mullany witnessed his son and friends playing a game with a broomstick and a perforated plastic ball. The father saw a billion dollar idea ahead of him. From their makeshift yard game, Mullany created a runaway success. Part of the genius of the Wiffle Ball was that, unlike a baseball, it could safely hit a window or person without harming them. Local Heroes – Paul Newman’s Legacy in Westport

Paul Newman was one of the most celebrated and respected actors of the 20th century. While he was well-known for classics such as The Hustler (1961) or Cool Hand Luke (1967), Newman also carried a legacy of as a businessman & philanthropist. Newman moved to Westport in 1950 where he took acting classes at The Yale School of Drama. Newman fell in love with Connecticut and decided to reside in Westport. Over the next few decades, Newman became an active supporter of the community and Westport Country Playhouse. In 1982, Newman ventured into the business route with Newman’s Own, which was a niche food product line at the time. Today, Newman’s Own is available at any supermarket, and donates all after-tax profits to charity (over $460 million since 1982). Peskiest Pigeons – St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Shelton

First established in Repton, Connecticut, in 1740, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church brought together Anglican services in the area. The Repton area would later become Ripton, and later Huntington as it is known today. But in 1811, townsman Sidney Deforest attempted to rid the church’s belfry of pigeons by shooting them with his musket. While Sidney did manage to remove the pigeons, he also burned down the church with the tow wadding from his musket in the process. A few years later, the church was built atop the same site and still stands today (pigeon-free). If you need to move out of your pigeon-infested home, don’t pull out your musket. The Amazing Race – Monroe’s Race for Wellness

On Sunday June 5th, Monroe will be holding its 24th annual ‘Sprint for Monroe’ 5K race. Last year the event raised over $16,000 for local charities, such as the Monroe Food Pantry. The 5k loop starts and ends in Wolfe Park, and there will be coffee, bagels, donuts, pastry, yogurt, and fresh fruit available in the morning for hungry runners. There will also be a kids run held the same morning, so bring the whole family! Dance the Night Away in Trumbull – A Middle Eastern and Live Music Dance Event

On Saturday June 4th, the Armenian Church of the Holy Ascension Hall will be Celebrating the 85th Anniversary of the church with a night of dancing, food, and music. The event will feature the Harry Bedrossian Ensemble, with Harry Bedrossian (oud, vocals), Leon Janikian (clarinet), Kenny Kallajian (guitar, vocals), and Gary Hovhanessian (dumbeg). 7 to 11 p.m. Adults: $25 in advance, $30 at the door. Ages 12–20: $10. Under 12 free. Includes Mezze, Beverages, Desserts and Entertainment for the kids. The event runs from 7pm-11pm. It will be $30 for adults and $10 for children.
