First constructed in 1822, the Stratford Point Lighthouse has a colorful history. While not open to the general public, a view of this historic site can be seen from the Short Beack Park. In the late 1700’s, a murder by pitchfork was committed by the then owner of the house on the point. In 1888, it was noted that the current lighthouse keeper had a cocker spaniel who had become amusingly adept at catching fish. In 1897, the daughter of the lighthouse keeper save 2 men from drowning nearby. In 1911, a message in bottle was found at the point, writings from a doomed crew member of a ship wrecked 10 years earlier. In the mid 1850’s, it is said a hopeful group of treasure hunter’s dug at the site in search of the treasure of notorious pirate William Kidd.
