Before 1640, the land that is now known as Stamford was inhabited by Native Americans and known as “Rippowam”. In 1640, Captain Turner of the New Haven County traded 12 coats, 12 hoes, 12 ratchets, 12 glasses, 12 knives, four kettles, and four fathoms of white wampum for the deed to some of the land. The first settlers there changed adopted the name “Stamford” in 1642, but it wasn’t until 1671 that they built their first schoolhouse (which also doubled as a church). With the deal continually being updated, the Native Americans in the area eventually abandoned the  land for a more substantial amount of money in 1700.
