The Harvard Five were a group of Harvard architects who banded together and constructed 80 homes from the 1940’s to the 1960’s. When these young men returned home after World II, they were able to buy inexpensive land in New Canaan in order to start these projects. Their homes were very atypical for the time, and often dismissed or ridiculed as the homes were so far removed from the typical architecture of the time. Many New Canaan residents were bothered simply by the presence of these buildings in their neighborhoods. Despite the backlash towards the work of the five in their time, today their projects are widely revered as highly innovative and ground-breaking.
