Take a moment to think back to 1649; in England, 59 judges had just convened to sentence King Charles I to death. When King Charles II restored the monarchy in England 10 years later, many of those same judges fled. Three of them fled to New England. One hid in New Haven, while the other two hid out in Boston. But when an arrest order was again placed on the two in Boston, the pair fled to New Haven. After a brief stint staying with a local minister, the outlaws fled to a cave in West Rock Ridge. Hiding out there for a month with the help of locals, the pair were eventually forced to leave when a mountain lion threatened their hideout. The pair ultimately escaped with the third judge to Hadley, Massacheusetts, where they spent the remainder of their days. You can still visit this colorful site today in West Rock Ridge State Park, where a plaque commemorates it’s short stint as a hideout. The cave is known today as “Three Judge’s Cave”, or simply “Judge’s Cave”.
