The Den is the largest preserve in Fairfield County. It’s also one of the most popular, with over 40,000 visitors a year. It is named for a spooky marking in a large stone on the preserve; charcoal makers in the area used to say the hoof-like mark was made by the devil himself. The site is said to have been used as a hunting ground for the Native Americans as long as 5000 years ago. Some of the wildlife that can be found there includes bobcats, coyotes, copperhead snakes, red foxes, as well as a large variety of birds and waterfowl. The location was even used as a hideout at one point! In April of 1777, residents of Weston and Redding hid in the preserve to evade British troops sent to the area to destroy a military supply depot in Danbury.
